Bikepacking equipment

- Yeti Rambler DuraSip: ceramic-coated, vacuum-insulated stainless steel mugs, cups and jugs; do not affect the flavour of the drink; dishwasher-safe.
- Capacities ranging from 4 to 24 oz, plus a 1–1.9-litre French press; prices e.g. €40 (6-oz set), €35 (10-oz wine tumbler), €150 (1.9-litre French press).
- Smaller models are suitable for relaxed bikepacking, whilst larger mugs and French presses are better suited to use in the car, at campsites or at base camp.

- A 6-litre frame bag for €59.99, weighing 264 g, made from robust 600D fabric and featuring IPX3 splash protection; fits very securely within the frame triangle.
- One main compartment with a mesh pocket, internal straps and a feed-through for cables or a hydration tube; smooth-running zip, but less flexible organisation than the 9-litre version.
- More compact than the 9-litre model; depending on the frame, it leaves space for a water bottle on the seat tube and is particularly suitable for day trips and light bikepacking tours.

The perfect size for bikepacking?: Review of the Decathlon Rockrider frame bag

- Affordable, waterproof 4-litre frame bag weighing 140 g, with easy fitting and a clever, virtually airtight zip for compressing luggage.
- The zip is very stiff, usually requiring both hands to operate, and prevents quick opening whilst riding.
- The adhesive fastening loops, rather than stitched ones, tear after a few months; the pannier loses its secure hold and becomes practically unusable.

LIDL’s frame bag fails the test: clever details, poor workmanship!

- Switch Rack Rear Mudguard: 78 g, polypropylene, permanently fitted to the Switch Rack bracket, protects the rider and bags from splashes, price 19.99 euros.
- Gravel Fork Mudguard: 26 g, polypropylene, secured beneath the fork crown with cable ties, reduces spray on the face, down tube and headset, €13.99.
- Both mudguards are lightweight, easy to fit and designed for bikes that require only limited additional splash protection in wet conditions.

- Canyon and Cyclite have developed two custom-fit, aerodynamic bags exclusively for the new Canyon Grail race gravel bike.
- The midloader and top tube bag sit securely and look like an integral part of the bike, but can get caught on plastic tabs on your trousers.
- The Midloader, with a flat zip, weighing 100 g and featuring a push-to-release system, costs €119.99, whilst the Top Tube Bag costs €69.99.

A perfect match: Cyclite and the new Canyon Grail

- From September 2026, Ortlieb will be introducing its own TIDURA material system, consisting of a specially formulated fabric, a TPU coating and welded seams.
- TIDURA strong and core differ in terms of load-bearing capacity and weight; both are abrasion-resistant, waterproof (up to IP67) and designed for long-term use.
- The first products to feature this system are the Back-Roller 20L, Velocity 23L, Duffle Zip and Daypack 23L; Ortlieb offers a 5-year guarantee and spare parts for at least 10 years.

- Very high visibility thanks to hi-vis orange and all-round reflectors, but without EN1150 certification and therefore not fully compliant with the law.
- Four front pockets and a large rear compartment offer 8 litres of storage space; no zipped pocket; hydration bladder compatible, but not included.
- One-size-fits-all design ideal for average builds; fiddly carabiners; high price; nevertheless recommended for ultracycling and night-time bikepacking.

- The ‘Arschrakete’ is light, slim and ideal for sporty overnight trips with minimal, compressible luggage and a bike set-up that remains sporty.
- A luggage rack is heavier, but offers more volume, better accessibility and a smoother ride, particularly when carrying a tent or self-catering gear.
- Choose according to your intended use: the ‘Arschrakete’ for minimalists, the luggage rack for carrying more, and a removable rack as a compromise for commuters and weekend tours.

Rear rack or pannier rack? Which is really better for a gravel bike?

- Tailfin is expanding its range, which has previously been limited to black, with two durable colour options: Kentucky Bluegrass (khaki/olive) and Candy Mountain (sand/stone).
- Both colours are available for eight bag models, ranging from 0.8-litre top-tube bags to 16-litre panniers, at no extra cost compared to black.
- Tailfin offers a five-year warranty against manufacturing defects and grants a 30 per cent discount on equivalent replacement products following a crash.

Not just black: new bikepacking bags from Tailfin

- Luggage increases the vehicle’s mass, shifts the centre of gravity and affects steering, braking distance and stability, depending on the position and distribution of the load.
- Loading heavy items low down, centrally and symmetrically, close to the frame, improves control; luggage that is too high or too heavily loaded at the front makes the bike sluggish.
- Before setting off on a ride, check the system weight, load capacity, tyre pressure and fastenings; test rides reveal any instability, wobbling and weak points.

Cycling with a load: How luggage affects handling

- Trek'n Eat offers reusable ‘brew-in-the-bag’ coffees – Mission (strong) and Summit Coffee (mild) – for outdoor and bikepacking trips.
- The coffee brewer bags combine filter coffee and French press methods, are refillable and feature markings for mild, medium or strong.
- The packaging is made from 100% recycled material and is manufactured in Denmark; however, there is no information on the origin of the beans or whether they meet organic or Fairtrade standards.
