Is it worth investing in ready-made tool sets, for example from Procraft or Topeak? We took a close look at the contents of three tool cases ranging from €50 to €380.

What's in it, what's missing? We looked at the contents of three toolboxes and drew our conclusions.

As a basis: Gedore bit set 1/4" 40-piece

The central tools from the classic bit set from the"Red" series from Gedore The set includes a reversible ratchet with 1/4-inch square drive and a magnetic bit screwdriver with hexagon socket plus adapter. The small box (230 x 52 x 130 mm) contains sockets from 5.5 to 13 millimetres for hexagon head screws; a total of 29 bits for Torx, hexagon socket, slotted and Phillips screws complete the set. A favourable basis, but some spanner sizes and special tools would have to be added if necessary. The material quality of the "Red" series is sufficient, but lower than the well-known Gedore standard.

Missing tools: Special tool, 10 mm hexagon socket, 4 mm and 5 mm hexagon socket

Additional tools: Torx "TH", a total of 9 PH and PZ bits for Phillips screws

Plus: a good basis for most screwing applications

Minus: Important hexagon socket bits missing

Price: 45 Euro

The favourable one: Procraft Starter tool case

The Procraft case is a classic entry-level set, as you can find from many manufacturers for less than 100 euros. It should be clear that you should not expect a fully equipped, high-quality bike workshop. Nevertheless, most starter kits contain the most important tools to be able to carry out the most necessary maintenance on the bike from time to time. As a rule, savings are made here on the quality of the materials. Cheap screwdrivers and very small hexagon sockets make repairs more difficult. Special tools such as Bowden cable cutters or chain lock pliers are not available.

Additional tools: Flat ring spanner 13/14/15/16, repair kit, slotted screwdriver

Plus: Almost complete basis at a favourable price

Minus: Handling and quality of the tools partly not convincing; hooky inserts in the case

The expensive one: Topeak Prepbox

The Topeak tools are stored securely and clearly organised in the robust case. A magnetic pocket can hold additional tools. All tools are cleanly manufactured and have no sharp edges. They impress even on long screwdriver evenings with their efficient and safe operation. The almost complete basic equipment is supplemented by useful parts such as the large handle for bottom bracket or cassette service. If required, the equipment can be extended with high-quality tools from the Topeak range.
