After the Vuelta Femenina and the Women's Tour of the Basque Country, the next race of the Women's World Tour is now coming up on Spanish soil with the Vuelta a Burgos Feminas. Demi Vollering (Team SD Worx - Protime) wants to complete her Spanish hat-trick once again after her two victories in the aforementioned races.
Having already won the Strade Bianche Donne and the two tours taking place on Spanish soil, the Dutch rider from FDJ - Suez is once again the absolute top favourite this year. Other co-favourites are Lotte Kopecky (Team SD Worx - Protime), Marlen Reusser (Movistar Team) and the German Antonia Niedermaier (Canyon//SRAM zondacrypto). Elisa Longo Borghini (UAE Team ADQ) could also challenge Vollering for the overall classification.
The peloton heads north from Burgos to start the stage. The stage should not be underestimated - especially because there are already three third-category climbs, all of which are rather short. The finish is then a real challenge, as the road really climbs again in the last three kilometres. While the gradient is still 4 per cent three kilometres before the finish, it is already 8 per cent by the time you reach the finish.
Stage 2 should be a treat for the sprinters. With only one third-category climb and less than 1000 metres of elevation gain, there is likely to be a sprint to the finish. The final kilometres to the finish will be on a 4-metre wide road with a slight incline, although the gradient will also increase towards the finish line on this arrival.
With three third-category climbs and a tough uphill finish, the overall classification could already be decided here. At 7.8 kilometres and over 9 per cent, the final climb is certainly not an easy one and will certainly create time gaps between the favourites.
A slightly undulating individual time trial at the end of the tour could provide the final shifts in the overall classification, even if this will probably be decided the day before. The time trial is less than 10 kilometres long, so there won't be too many gaps between the best riders.
There will be no live coverage of the women's Tour of Burgos on German television. A live stream of all stages is available on Discovery Plus (for a fee). The streams run from 14:30 to 16:00.
