Demi Vollering made things clear on stage 2 of the Vuelta a Burgos Feminas 2024 at the summit finish on the Alto de Rosales. None of her rivals were able to resist the Dutch rider from SD Worx - Protime. The 27-year-old won ahead of Evita Muzic (FDJ-Suez) and Karlijn Swinkels (UAE Team ADQ). Liane Lippert (Movistar) was the best German in 9th place.
In the almost four kilometre long final climb to the Alto de Rosales, Vollering seized the initiative in the last kilometre and reached the finish line as a soloist. The Dutchwoman thus also took the lead in the overall standings. Lotta Henttala (EF Education-Cannondale), who had won the first stage, no longer played a role on the second day of the Tour of Burgos.
It took around 60 kilometres before a breakaway group was able to break away. Marta Romeu (Laboral Kutxa - Fundacion Euskadi), Valentina Basilico (Enelcat - CMTeam), Miryam Nunyez (Primeau Velo - Groupe Abadie) and Antri Christoforou (Human Powered Health) set off. However, they were unable to open up a lead of more than two minutes. The quartet's breakaway attempt ended 32 kilometres before the finish.
Twelve kilometres later, a group of around 20 riders tried to break away, but this attempt was also countered. This left a large peloton going into the final climb to the Alto de Rosales. Under the pace dictation of Team SD Worx - Protime, an elimination race took place there. A good kilometre and a half before the finish, FDJ-Suez took over and increased the pace again.
Undeterred, Demi Vollering rode to the front in the final kilometre and pulled away. Only Karlijn Swinkels (UAE Team ADQ) and Evita Muzic (FDJ-Suez) were initially able to get within her radius, but shortly before the finish they had to realise that Vollering could not be caught. As a result, the Dutchwoman took the win ahead of Muzic and Swinkels.
