Schwalbe's G-One gravel tyres in a duel: RS Pro vs. RX Pro. Both gravel tyres make a good impression, as their strengths outweigh their weaknesses. The TOUR test shows which is the better tyre.

Schwalbe G-One RS Pro: Semi-slick for the rough stuff

Can you ride a semi-slick tyre like the RS Pro over rough rock and through mud and do without centre knobs? Yes, you can. We've ridden thousands of kilometres on them. When it gets rough, like in the Provençe, you have to adjust your speed, otherwise stones can cut through the tread, but the tyre has held up and the sealant has parried all damage. Its strength is its incredibly smooth running. Most road bike tyres roll worse than the RS Pro on rough roads. Compared to its predecessor, the carcass has been revised and the tyre is even faster.

Schwalbe G-One RX Pro: It's all in the mix

The RX Pro offers more bite in all situations with 2.4 millimetre high centre lugs, which nevertheless roll very well (but audibly) due to their close arrangement. In the mixture of speed and grip, the RX is more versatile than the RS and also performs well in the overall evaluation. But it is also heavier and doesn't roll quite as spectacularly easily. That's why you have to think about which compromise is more relevant. The only time both tyres faltered was when sealing during initial fitting, but experience has shown that this can be remedied with sealant. The tyres are produced in Vietnam and designed in the Bergisches Land.

More gravel tyres in the test

This is how we tested

All tests were carried out independently by manufacturers using their own methods. The rolling resistance test on level ground should be emphasised. We can also measure on gravel and see that a thicker tread adds power. As a "road" for the rolling resistance test, we choose a rough surface that interacts with studs and shows which rubber compound works efficiently.

The test criteria were weighted as follows for the evaluation:

  • Weight: 10 %
  • Rolling resistance gravel: 20
  • Rolling resistance road: 25 %
  • Cut resistance tread: 10 %
  • Cut resistance tread: 5 %
  • Grip: 20 %
  • Road feel: 10 %
