The American component manufacturer Enve today presented the new Hex Carapace gravel tyre. This expands the company's existing gravel tyre series with a particularly robust variant for demanding terrain. According to Enve, the main feature of the new tyre is the continuous Kevlar protection from bead to bead, which should ensure increased puncture resistance. At the same time, the manufacturer promises that the rolling efficiency and handling characteristics of the original Hex tyre will be retained. The Carapace is available in three widths: 40 millimetres, 44 millimetres and 48 millimetres. All variants can be ridden both tubeless and with a tube. Enve specifies a recommended air pressure range of 1.5 to 3.5 bar, whereby this varies depending on the tyre width and should also be adjusted to the system weight (wheel plus rider) and surface.

Tread design and driving characteristics

The profile of the Carapace is based on the proven design of the original Hex tyre. It consists of hexagonal tread blocks which, according to Enve, are intended to provide even traction when starting off, braking and cornering. The manufacturer states that this tread design is particularly suitable for mixed, dry and hard surfaces. The hexagonal blocks should be able to adapt flexibly to the surface to ensure safe handling. A special feature of the tread pattern is the progressive arrangement of the tread blocks. Enve explains that this arrangement improves the rolling properties, but also removes dirt better and offers more grip in bends. In this way, the manufacturer aims to optimise both efficiency and control on demanding gravel tracks.

Technical details and design

The Kevlar protection is the central element in the construction of the Hex Carapace. This protective layer extends from bead to bead and, according to Enve, should provide effective protection against punctures without having a negative impact on rolling efficiency or handling characteristics. In addition to the Kevlar protection, the tyre has a reinforced bead area, which is intended to offer increased protection against punctures. The bead itself is also made of Kevlar and is specially optimised for use on hookless rims.
