Good training on a road bike requires a holistic approach: from balance training to targeted load control. Numerous aids support targeted training.

Dumbbell set

Why? Not only sprinters benefit from more stability in the upper body. After all, it is only with the appropriate strength that racing-style sitting positions are possible over longer periods of time. That's why it's better to get off the bike ten minutes earlier and get on the weights.

How much does it cost? A set consisting of dumbbells and barbells is available from around 100 euros >> e.g. here . Spending significantly more is only worthwhile if you have a strong focus on strength training.

Fascia roller

Why? Fascia training enables cyclists to regenerate faster and eliminate muscular problems. The pressure of the roller promotes blood circulation, which accelerates the breakdown of metabolic products.

How much does it cost? A simple foam roller for 10 to 12 euros (>> e.g. available here) fulfils the purpose. If you want to work on your back regularly, you can use slightly more expensive models with special recesses for the spine.

Yoga mat/training mat

Why? Versatile use: as a base for the Smarttrainer or for yoga, strength and stretching exercises. And no training plan should be without them.

How much does it cost? Yoga mats are available e.g. at Decathlon for less than ten euros.

Smarttrainer

Why? Indoor training is no longer monotonous and boring - provided you can call a smart roller trainer your own. It can be connected to any training software via Bluetooth or ANT+. Particularly practical when it's raining or snowing outside.

Costs? If you buy last year's models, you can save up to 30 per cent. Powerful smart trainers are available from around 400 euros. The top-of-the-range models from 1,000 euros upwards are quieter and the riding experience is even more realistic. To the mega test with 22 smart trainers.

On-board computer

Why? The control centre on the handlebars brings together all the collected data - viewing the training data plays an important role in further training planning. The time spent in the training zones and the times/performance on climbs provide information about progress. GPS data is an asset because it allows route segments to be analysed. Even if smartphones can now help with route planning using a routing app, the full package is only available on on-board computers with a GPS function.

How much does it cost? Inexpensive models start at around 100 euros, but sometimes have their pitfalls in terms of display, usability or Bluetooth pairing. For 200 to 300 euros, you can get a device from the established manufacturers that can do everything. With Rosebikes or Decathlon There is a large selection of bike computers.

Heart rate monitor

Why?
Long endurance sessions can be easily controlled via the heart rate. In addition to the power meter, the heart rate provides an indication of fatigue. The more strenuous the training, the faster the heart rate. But beware: the heart rate reacts slowly. It can take minutes to reach the target zone. Short, intensive intervals should be controlled by feel or with a power meter.

How much does it cost? Inexpensive chest straps for heart rate measurement are available from around 30 euros >> available here . Their advantage: greater measuring accuracy than smartwatches.

Calendar

Why? Efficient training needs a plan. And this should ideally be in black and white. A classic calendar helps to harmonise family and work commitments with sport. Alternatively, you can use an online training planner or a smartphone app, ideally with a reminder function.

Costs? Wide range: from free calendars on your smartphone to €5 to €15 for pocket calendars and training planners with monthly membership fees.

Scales

Why? The road cyclist's friend and foe. Less weight means more watts per kilogramme - but: don't overdo it with the weight loss, because only those who still have power reserves can put enough power on the pedals.

How much does it cost? Inexpensive products costing around 10 euros are perfectly adequate. Fat measuring scales are usually more expensive, but their values are too inaccurate.

Powermeter/wattmeter pedals

Why? Power meters take training to a completely different level. The targets can be implemented precisely and progress can be measured. During the race, the power can be sensibly distributed.

How much does it cost? Top models that measure the forces in the crank cost 800 euros and more. Pedals that measure on one side are available from 300 euros >> available here.
