New laws to make cycling safer in Spain
Mallorca is preparing for the cycling season: New laws are to ensure greater safety. Drivers must reduce their speed and maintain a minimum distance when overtaking cyclists. Stricter regulations also apply to cyclists.

In March and April, thousands of cyclists will once again be spending their racing bike holidays on Mallorca. If Spanish lawmakers have their way, it will be a little safer. Drivers must reduce their speed by 20 km/h when overtaking cyclists. If 90 km/h is actually permitted, overtaking is now only allowed at 70 km/h. In addition, a minimum distance of 1.5 metres must be maintained when overtaking.

Rules also tightened for cyclists

If a car is driving behind a cyclist in a built-up area, a safety distance of five metres must be maintained. Rules have also been tightened for cyclists: helmets are always compulsory - even on long uphill climbs. In addition, reflective clothing must be worn when visibility is poor, for example at dusk, in rain or fog.
