The climb to Alpe d'Huez has long been a legend thanks to numerous epic Tour de France stages. The climb also offers a special experience for amateur cyclists

The road to Alpe d'Huez is one of the most legendary climbs in the Alps. Since 1952, the 21 hairpin bends to the ski station have been regularly Tour-de-France-history. Whoever wins this mountain finish secures a place in the cycling Olympics.

Steady ascent to Alpe d'Huez

Viewed in isolation, the climb 40 kilometres east of Grenoble is not very difficult. The gradient of the smooth tarmac rarely exceeds the eight per cent mark. Once you have found your rhythm, the ascent to the resort town with its hotel castles and souvenir stalls is steady.

All the more reason for cyclists to follow the small road to the Col de Sarenne after the finish of the classic mountain stage. Contrary to popular belief, the road to Alpe d'Huez is not a dead end.
