Third and fourth place went to the two Bora-Hansgrohe professionals Matteo Fabbro and Florian Lipowitz.
For stage winner Carr, his persistence paid off. "I've been in the breakaway three times this week - so probably more often in leading groups than in the peloton. Today I was still tired in the morning and then surprised how well my legs worked in the finale. I'm very happy that I was able to win the stage," said the Brit.
In the overall standings, Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos Grenadiers), who had won stages one and two, came out on top on the final day of the Tour of the Alps 2023, ahead of Hugh Carthy (EF Education EasyPost) and Jack Haig (Bahrain-Victorious). Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe) is also already in good form. The North German, who is aiming to ride a three-week stage race at the Giro for the first time, decided the mountain arrival in Brentonico San Valentino in his favour on the third day and finished sixth in the final standings, 45 seconds behind the leader. Kämna's team-mate Aleksandr Vlasov, seventh in the overall standings the day before, did not start the fifth stage. The Russian is expected to support the Raubling-based racing team's Classics squad, which has been plagued by cancellations, in Liège-Bastogne-Liège on Sunday.
