The 50th edition of the Tour of the Algarve will take place from 14 February to 18 February 2024. Here is an overview of the most important information.

The Tour of the Algarve is an annual tour in Portugal at the beginning of the season. The event was held for the first time in 1960 and has since developed into one of the most important professional cycling races in Portugal. In 2024, the tour will once again consist of five stages, with the fourth stage being an individual time trial. The other stages feature mountain top finishes and flat sections, so that different types of riders get their money's worth in the tour. The highlights of the race are traditionally the mountain finishes on Alto do Malhao and Alto da Foia, both of which will also be on the programme in 2024.

Tour of the Algarve 2024: Preparing for the first cycling highlights

The Tour of the Algarve is part of the UCI Pro Series - a category below the UCI World Tour - and attracts some of the best teams from all over the world. In recent years, the Volta ao Algarve has grown in importance as it is used by many cycling stars as preparation for the spring classics or the first major tours such as Paris-Nice or Tirreno-Adriatico.

The list of winners of the Tour of the Algarve includes stars such as Alberto Contador, Geraint Thomas or Remco Evenepoel - In 2023, the Colombian Daniel Felipe Martinez from the British team won the race. Ineos Grenadierswho will start for Bora-Hansgrohe in 2024. There is no professional women's race at the Tour of the Algarve.

Algarve Granfondo: The Everyman Race

In addition to the professional men's race, the Volta ao Algarve also has an amateur competition, the Algarve Granfondo. This takes place in the run-up to the time trial on 17 February in Albufeira. Two different distances are on offer. The "Mediofondo" is the shorter of the two race courses on offer and covers 80 kilometres and 1200 metres in altitude, while the "Granfondo" covers 133 kilometres with 2450 metres in altitude.
