Stage 1 of the Tour of Britain Women 2025 initially passed off without any major incidents. The peloton remained closed for a long time until a small group was able to break away from the peloton just over 35 kilometres before the finish. This breakaway group included Le Court, Faulkner and the Italian Linda Zanetti from Team Uno-X Mobility. However, the latter quickly dropped back. Le Court and Faulkner made common cause and saved a small lead over the peloton around Wiebes to the finish.
Kimberley (Le Court) Pienaar's stage win marks a historic moment for cycling in Mauritius. It is the first stage win for a rider from the island nation at the Tour of Britain Women. Pienaar, who has already won the prestigious Liège-Bastogne-Liège classic in her career, once again proved her class at World Tour level.
With her stage win, Kimberley (Le Court) Pienaar not only took the lead in the overall standings, but also in the points classification. She now leads by five seconds ahead of Kristen Faulkner and 14 seconds ahead of Lorena Wiebes. Pienaar is also ahead in the mountains classification, tied on points with Dutch rider Anouska Koster from Team Uno-X Mobility. British rider Cat Ferguson from the Movistar Team leads the junior classification.
The Tour of Britain Women 2025 comprises a total of four stages and ends in Glasgow on 8 June. The second stage leads over 114.3 kilometres from Hartlepool to Saltburn-by-the-Sea and promises another exciting decision with its hilly profile. It remains to be seen whether Kimberley (Le Court) Pienaar can defend her lead or whether the favourites such as Lorena Wiebes and Kristen Faulkner will fight back. The total distance of the tour is 421.8 kilometres.
