The "Tour of Britain Women" is a stage race in England and Wales. It was called the "Women's Tour" from 2014 to 2022, but was renamed in 2024. With a new organiser, the prestigious race is now back in the World Tour. The first winner of the race was Marianne Voss in 2014, one year later the German Lisa Brennauer secured the overall victory. Elisa Longo Borghini from Italy won the last edition of the race in 2022. The record winner is Lizzie Deignan with two victories in 2016 and 2019. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the women's race.
With the renaming of the Tour of the United Kingdom, the number of stages has also changed. For the first time, there are four stages instead of the previous six. The first stage starts in the Welsh town of Welshpool. The profile of the stage is mostly hilly, with the Llangynog also featuring a difficult climb. The first time gaps are likely to appear right at the start of the tour. On the second stage, which leads around Wrexham, there is also a climb, the Horeshoe Pass, which only climbers with good speed are likely to survive without large time gaps. Otherwise, the stage also has hardly any flat sections.
The third stage takes the riders around the town of Warrington. This could be the first and possibly only time that the sprinters' time has come. With less than 800 metres of climbing, it is clearly the stage that requires the least climbing skills. The final fourth stage leads from Manchester to Leigh. There are again numerous steep climbs, but hardly any flat metres. Classics and mountain riders therefore have the best chance of victory here.
So if you want to win the Tour of Britain 2024, you need two components: On the one hand, climbing skills are required, on the other hand, classic qualities are elementary. On the many short but crisp climbs, you have to parry attacks and stay on the accelerator yourself.
The Tour of Britain 2024 cannot be seen live on German television. However, all stages can be followed live via Discovery Plus with a paid subscription.
