In the finale in Tanunda, which was affected by a crash, Bauhaus went into the wind early and ultimately celebrated his 20th professional victory after the photo finish was analysed. In the overall standings, prologue winner Alberto Bettiol from Italy is now six seconds ahead of Matthews.

"I crashed heavily, but was able to recover well. We were always in front on the last lap, the team did a good job," said Bauhaus. "I only knew about my victory when the sports director told me over the radio. I'm not the type to get too excited too soon."
The second stage will once again give the sprinters a chance. It will cover 154.8 kilometres from Brighton to Victor Harbour. The Tour Down Under ends after five stages on Sunday on Mount Lofty east of Adelaide. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the race has not been held as part of the WorldTour in the past two years. Defending champion Richie Porte has since ended his career.
