In the canton of Bern, you can sometimes get off your bike, not because you're totally exhausted, but because the landscape is so grandiose that you simply have to stop to take it all in: the mountains, the meadows, the air, the sun - and whoop out loud. Such places can be found in the Emmental, for example, when the firn-covered peaks from the Finsteraarhorn to the Blümslisalp spread out majestically behind the green hills in the distance like a widescreen cinema picture in front of the first row of seats; or on the Gestelen Pass in the Saanenland, which is so remote and beautiful in its silence that esotericists believe it to be a place of power; or on the ascent to the Männlichen mountain hotel, when you almost feel as if you are crawling into the north face of the Eiger, into that notorious 1.800 metres of ice and rock that shrink the cyclist in front of it to nothing.
At the foot of the Eiger lies the village of Grindelwald, where TOUR author Dres Balmer comes from. He has lived in Bern for many years and knows every road suitable for racing bikes in his homeland like no other. He has opened his touring treasure chest for us: In addition to classics, such as the crossing of the Grimsel, Furka and Susten passes, there are some quiet gems and great, little-known passes. You can find all of this in the Bern Special, a supplement in the June issue of TOUR, which you can download here. order conveniently online here can.
