I am biased: Ever since my childhood holidays, I have loved the canton of Bern, the alpine meadows, the firn peaks, the food. All of this still magically attracts me, even if I have to admit that Bern, Switzerland in general, is an expensive mistress. But a beauty that is worth every franc.
Why? Have you ever got off your bike because the landscape spread out before you in such a magnificent way that you simply had to stop to soak it all up: the mountains, the meadows, the air, the sun? And whoop out loud? That happened to me in many places in the canton of Bern: in the Emmental, where on a climb behind the green hills in the distance, the firn-covered peaks from the Finsteraarhorn to the Blüemlisalp spread out majestically like a widescreen cinema picture; on the Gestelen Pass, which leads into the Simmental and is so remote and beautiful in the silence that esotericists suspect a place of power in its vicinity; or on the ascent to the Männlichen mountain lodge, when you think you are almost crawling into the north face of the Eiger, into that notorious 1.800 metres of ice and rock that shrink the cyclist in front of it to nothing. At the foot of the Eiger lies the village of Grindelwald, where TOUR author Dres Balmer comes from. He has lived in Bern for many years and knows the most beautiful roads of his homeland like no other. He has opened his touring treasure chest for us: In addition to classics, such as the crossing of the Grimsel, Furka and Susten passes, you will also find quiet gems and great, little-known passes.
Have fun with this travel special and retracing the tours!
