The ninth stage of the Vuelta a España 2025 takes the peloton over 195.5 kilometres from Alfaro to the Valdezcaray ski resort. This will be the eighth stage arrival at the Vuelta a España for the Valdezcaray ski resort. The list of previous winners reads impressively: Simon Clarke (2012), Jonathan Gonzalez (2004), Alex Zülle (1996), Fabio Parra (1991), Jean-François Bernard (1990), Pedro Delgado (1989) and Sean Kelly (1988). After a long, undulating section, a 13.2 kilometre long final climb with an average gradient of 5 per cent awaits. The first half of the climb is particularly steep.

Sporting assessment of the 9th stage of the Vuelta a España 2025

For pure climbers, the climb may not be steep enough at an average of 5 per cent to make decisive time gains. Breakaway specialists with good climbing skills also have realistic chances if they enter the final climb with a sufficient lead. The most likely scenario seems to be that either a strong breakaway rider gets through or an overall classification rider attacks in the finale to make up valuable seconds. Positioning before the final climb will be crucial, as the climb is long but not extremely selective and tactical skill will be required.
