The Vuelta a España 2025 brings a team time trial back into the programme on the fifth day of the race. The route covers 24.1 kilometres around Figueres, the birthplace of the famous artist Salvador Dalí. After the first challenging days in Italy and France, the Tour of Spain is thus returning to a classic discipline that was last on the programme in 2023 at the start in Barcelona. Back then, the organisers' decision to hold the race in the evening caused chaotic scenes as the teams battled for victory in the dark and on a wet road. The DSM-firmenich team managed to come out on top despite the adverse conditions. This year's track in Figueres is much less demanding and should ensure fair conditions. The course is almost flat and only offers a slight climb in the finale with a gradient of around four per cent to the finish.
When analysing the favourites to win the team time trial in Figueres, various factors must be taken into account. Firstly, teams with several strong time trial specialists have an advantage. Teams like Team Visma | Lease a Bike with riders like Victor Campenaerts, Matteo Jorgenson and Jonas Vingegaard, or Team INEOS Grenadiers with time trial specialists like Filippo Ganna are traditionally among the favourites in such disciplines. UAE Team Emirates - XRG with riders such as Mikkel Bjerg, Juan Ayuso, Jay Vine and João Almeida are also likely to be among the front runners. However, the decisive factor will not only be the individual strength of individual riders, but above all the homogeneity of the team. The slight climb to the finish could also favour teams that have managed their strength well and still have enough reserves for the final kilometre. Overall, the team time trial in Figueres should be an exciting affair in which the big WorldTour teams can play to their strengths.
