After the time trial through Valladolid the day before, the riders will face a not-so-easy stage with a mountain finish over 163.2 kilometres in the 11th stage of the Vuelta. It starts in Lerma, which is located in the province of Burgos, and ends at the Laguna Negra near Vinuesa. The town was already the finish line of stage 3 of the Vuelta in 2020.

The race starts at an altitude of 840 metres in Lerma. From there, the peloton rides almost continuously flat for 145 kilometres to an intermediate sprint 18.2 kilometres before the finish. This is followed by the final climb - the last 6.5 kilometres are classified as a 1st category climb up to Laguna Negra in Vinuesa.

The final climb to Laguna Negra is 6.5 kilometres long and has an average gradient of 6.8 per cent. The last kilometre is particularly tough, with an average gradient of over 9 per cent and an elevation gain of 1,730 metres. Only explosive and enduring climbers are likely to stand a chance on this terrain at the mountain finish.

Due to the uphill finish, there will probably be a breakaway group that will try to bring the advantage to the finish on the final climb ahead of the favourites for the overall classification. Nevertheless, due to the flat terrain, it will probably be possible for the peloton not to let the breakaway go too far and to catch them in time. The classification riders would then be the favourites. On the mountain, there could be a showdown between Remco Evenepoel (Soudal - Quick Step) and the two Jumbo-Visma-drivers Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic come.
