In a largely uneventful stage, Ilse Pluimers (AG Insurance - Soudal Team) was the lone breakaway leader for a long time. The sprinters' teams only caught up with her in the final kilometre. The sprint itself was chaotic. World champion Lotte Kopecky (Team SD Worx - Protime) tried to launch European champion Wiebes. At first, however, it was Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) who had her nose in front. Wiebes only overtook her in the final metres.
Zoe Bäckstedt, who won the individual time trial on stage 1, finished 19th and thus defended her overall lead. However, from now on the young British woman has to fend for herself as a lone fighter. All four team-mates dropped out: Soraya Paladin and Maike van der Duin felt unwell and did not compete on Wednesday, Chloe Dygert broke her nose before stage 1 and also did not compete on Tuesday and Alex Morrice did not reach the finish of stage 2.

A real breakaway group was initially unable to break away after the start; it was more of an accordion-style breakaway that took place mid-stage on the small and narrow roads - riders were dropped, but came back again. Around 50 kilometres before the finish, Ilse Pluimers (AG Insurance - Soudal Team) took advantage of a lull in the race to make a break for it. From then on, the pace in the peloton remained slow. Team SD Worx - Protime organised the chase for sprinter Lorena Wiebes, but it became really tight to catch up with the breakaway rider Pluimers. The Dutchwoman was only caught in the final kilometre.
In a chaotic sprint, it was Lotte Kopecky who piloted her team-mate Lorena Wiebes to the front. Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) tried an extremely long sprint, but was ultimately unable to resist the European champion Wiebes.
