Wiebes was several metres ahead of second-placed Charlotte Kool (dsm-firmenich PostNL) at the finish line. Wiebes' team-mate and world champion Lotte Kopecky came third. Until then, however, very little happened on the 142-kilometre circuit around Maldon in the county of Essex. There were no breakaways along the way. Only 40 kilometres before the end did Agnieszka Skalniak-Sojka (Canyon//SRAM) attempt an attack. Kopecky reacted immediately, but nobody was able to break away.
There were also further attacks on the last climb twelve kilometres before the finish. Kopecky stepped up the pace at the mountain classification. For a moment, seven riders broke away, including Lizzie Deignan (Lidl-Trek) and Soraya Paladin (Canyon//SRAM), but this attack was just as unpromising as another attack just over seven kilometres before the finish, when another three riders rode ahead of the peloton for 2000 metres. However, this attack was also quickly put back. After that, there was only action again on the finishing straight.
Wiebes now leads the overall standings by 20 seconds ahead of Kopecky, with Paternoster and Kool a further second behind.
