Biniam Girmay is one of the favourites in the road race at the World Cycling Championships in Australia. The rider from Eritrea will be competing on a special Cube Litening Aero C:68X.

On Sunday, the men's road race is on the programme at the World Cycling Championships in Wollongong, Australia. Biniam Girmay from Eritrea will also be taking part, and the course should suit him. The 22-year-old normally rides a Cube road bike for the Intermarche-Wanty-Gobert team.

The bike manufacturer from Bavaria has come up with something very special for the World Championship race next weekend and has given the Cube Litening Aero C:68X a special paint job. Girmay's bike shines in green, red and blue - the national colours of Eritrea.

Girmay won the 2022 Gent-Wevelgem classic on a Cube Litening C:68X and is a celebrated star in his home country of Eritrea. After his unfortunate elimination from the Giro d'Italia, when he shot a Prosecco cork into his eyehe had to take a break. However, he recently showed himself to be in good form in preparation for the World Championships with a third place at the Grand Prix Quebec and a second place at the Grand Prix Wallonie.

This is another reason why Girmay is one of the favourites with his Cube Litening Aero C:68X on the hilly course in Wollongong. This role gives him "a morale boost", the 22-year-old recently told the Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad. "But of course that also has its downsides. I can no longer move around without being watched."

In the interview, Girmay also named the riders to watch out for on Sunday. "I don't think there's just one favourite. For me there are more. Wout van Aert is in first place for me, followed by Michael Matthews, who is competing in his home country and has a course that should suit him. And Mathieu van der Poel is also always in the draw. Riders who have this profile are among the favourites for me."
