Remco Evenepoel clearly won the time trial duel against Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard on the tenth stage of the 78th Vuelta.
The Belgian time trial world champion crossed the finish line just under a minute earlier than the Danish professional cyclist, who had claimed a decisive time trial victory in the title duel with Tadej Pogacar at the Tour of France in July. The Italian Filippo Ganna, time trial world champion in 2020 and 2021, took the day's victory in the Spanish city of Valladolid in 27:39 minutes.
Evenepoel finished 16 seconds behind in second, with Primoz Roglic from Slovenia in third and Vingegaard in tenth. In the overall standings, Evenepoel climbed to third place and reduced the gap to the leading American Sepp Kuss from 2:22 to 1:09 minutes.
No German rider made it into the top ten over the 25.8 kilometres, with Nico Denz finishing 14th and Lennard Kämna missing out on the top 20 after his success on the ninth stage.
On Wednesday, the professional cyclists have 163.5 kilometres from Lerma to La Laguna Negra on the agenda, with the route initially mostly flat before the climb. However, the steep final ramp with a category one climb to around 1700 metres is a tough one. This is where Evenepoel and Vingegaard could face off again. In 2020, the eventual overall winner Roglic took second place.
