Filippo Ganna has won the individual time trial on stage 10 of the Vuelta a Espana 2023. The world hour record holder won ahead of Remco Evenepoel.

After the eagerly anticipated individual time trial on stage 10 of the Vuelta a Espana 2023, Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma) remains in the overall leader's red jersey. The American delivered a solid performance and only lost 1:13 minutes to Remco Evenepoel (Soudal - Quick Step).

Vuelta a Espana 2023: Mixed feelings for Remco Evenepoel after stage 10

The time trial world champion finished in second place behind Filippo Ganna, who raced to victory after 25.8 kilometres in Valladolid at an average speed of 56 km/h. The Italian from Ineos Grenadiers thus gained revenge for the world championship time trial, where he was beaten by Evenepoel by 12 seconds. The Belgian in turn took time off his rivals in the battle for overall victory, but missed out on the all-round victory that many had expected.

"That's quite good, I think, knowing that I didn't have my best time trial legs today. I had a difficult moment after ten minutes. That must have been the reason why I lost some time there. If anyone deserved to win the stage, it was him (Filippo Ganna; editor's note). Overall, we should be happy with the result in terms of the general classification, but it's a shame that we didn't win the stage," explained Evenepoel on Eurosport.

How the 10th stage of the Vuelta a Espana 2023 went

In dry conditions, Stefan Bissegger (EF Education EasyPost) set the first benchmark time of 28:58 minutes. But the Swiss rider was not to sit in the "hot seat" for long. Filippo Ganna pulverised Bissegger's time by 1:19 minutes. The world hour record holder literally flew over the flat course in Valladolid on his Pinarello time trial machine with an hourly average of 56 kilometres, while Bissegger was relegated to eleventh place in the end.

Even the best riders in the classification had to bite their teeth out at Ganna's time. Among the top 15 riders in the overall standings, there was no major collapse. Only Mikel Landa (Bahrain-Victorious/+2:21), Lenny Martinez (Groupama-FDJ/+2:29) and Cian Uijtdebroeks (Bora-Hansgrohe/+2:35) were above average. On the other hand, Uijtdebroeks' team-mate Aleksandr Vlasov performed more than respectably, finishing fifth on the day, just 52 seconds behind Ganna. The UAE-Emirates trio of Marc Soler (+1:12), Juan Ayuso (+1:11) and Joao Almeida (+0:50) also delivered a good Vuelta time trial.

Jumbo-Visma still in the race for the red jersey with three riders

There should also be happy faces at Jumbo-Visma. Primoz Roglic (+0:36) won the team-internal duel with Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard (+1:18) and Sepp Kuss (+1:29) defended the red jersey. This means that the Dutch riders still have the opportunity to attack Remco Evenepoel with a three-man lead in the coming days.

The Soudal - Quick Step captain, on the other hand, fell slightly short of expectations in the time trial on stage 10 of the 2023 Vuelta. He only gained 20 seconds on Roglic, 1:02 minutes on Vingegaard and 1:13 minutes on Kuss. This means he goes into the next stages of the Tour of Spain 1:09 behind Kuss and just 27 seconds ahead of Roglic and 1:13 minutes ahead of Vingegaard. In view of the difficult mountain stages still to come, such as the Tourmalet or the Angliru, it will be difficult for Evenepoel to defend his Vuelta title against the superiority of Jumbo-Visma.
