There has already been speculation, but now it's official: the 2024 Tour de France will not finish on the Champs-Elysees, as is usually the case, but in Nice. In 2025, however, Paris will once again be the destination of the Tour of France.
The reason for moving the finish line is the proximity of the Tour de France to the Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris in 2024. The Tour de France website talks about "logistical constraints" that "will block the Champs-Elysees a few days before the start of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris." The 2024 Tour of France will start on 29 June and finish on 21 July. However, that is only five days before the start of the Olympic Games.
Since the Tour of France was first organised in 1903, the race only finished in Ville d'Avray in the first two years and then always in Paris. Since 1975, the finish has always been on the Champs-Elysees.
Nice has been a stage venue 37 times so far. The stage race started there in 1981 and 2020. The final stage in 2024 has another special feature. The Tour organisation has announced that the race will end with a time trial. The battle against the clock will start in Monaco. This means there will be no Tour d'Honneur, as is usually the tradition on the last day of the race. The last time there was a time trial on the final day was in 1989, when the US American Greg LeMond snatched the yellow jersey from the Frenchman Laurent Fignon by eight seconds on the Champs-Elysees.
In 2024, the peloton will be travelling through this region the day before the individual time trial in Nice. The Tour de France organisation confirmed that a stage in the hinterland of Nice is planned for 20 July 2024.
