The decision on the day's victory was made in the final kilometres, when Andreas Kron was able to break away from his rivals by stepping up the pace. He relegated Kaden Groves and Andrea Vendrame to 2nd and 3rd place in a sprint behind him.
Due to the rainy weather conditions, it was decided before the start of the race that the time for the overall classification would be taken 9 kilometres before the finish. The race organisers thus protected the classification riders from a hectic finale at the Castell de Montjuic. Nevertheless, they were not spared crashes: not only the two contenders for a top place at the Vuelta, Primoz Roglic and Santiago Buitrago, crashed, but the red jersey also fell on the slippery roads.
Team DSM-firmenich set the pace in the peloton for a long time and tried to defend the red jersey - worn by Lorenzo Milesi. However, the Italian crashed 20 kilometres from the finish and subsequently had to bury his ambitions. Andrea Piccolo from the EF-Education EasyPost team, who rode in the leading group until the final climb of the day, will be allowed to wear it tomorrow instead.
There were no gaps for the classification riders today. They all crossed the finish line in the peloton at the same time with 9 kilometres to go. Tomorrow, however, there could be some movement in the tableau: Tomorrow's stage takes the peloton into the Pyrenees and is a demanding mountain stage.
