Originally the captain of the team Jumbo-Visma Slovenian Primoz Roglic did not start the 15th stage from Rodez to Carcassonne.
During the race, Dutch rider Steven Kruijswijk, Tour bronze medallist in 2019, also had to abandon after a crash. But things didn't go smoothly for Vingegaard either. The man in yellow also crashed around 60 kilometres before the finish, but was able to catch up with the peloton again.
As in the previous year, Roglic had to retire early due to the consequences of a crash. The Olympic time trial champion crashed on the fifth stage and dislocated his shoulder.
Roglic reset his shoulder himself and continued the race. However, the loss of time meant that his hopes of his first overall victory in the Tour were gone. Roglic was used as a helper by race leader Vingegaard, but was obviously at the end of his tether. Already on Saturday, the three-time Vuelta winner on the way to Mende and lost around twelve minutes to the favourites.
