The incident occurred a good 36 kilometres before the finish of the 10th stage of the 2022 Tour de France in Megève.
At the time, the Italian Alberto Bettiol was in front, having broken away from a large breakaway group with the German professional cyclist Lennard Kämna. The peloton was a good seven minutes behind.
TV footage showed up to 20 demonstrators on the street who had set off pyrotechnics. Climate activists took responsibility for the action on Twitter.
The Tour organisation announced that the stage would continue with the same time intervals after the neutralisation. The race resumed around ten minutes later.
