Pellizzari has thus won a stage race for the first time in his young career. He laid the foundation for his second stage win in the course of the tour, which brought him his greatest success as a professional, with an attack 22 kilometres before the finish on the last climb. Neither Egan Bernal nor Thymen Arensman (both INEOS Grenadiers). The duo, who were four seconds behind the 22-year-old in the overall standings, were just as unable to close the resulting gap as Michael Storer (Tudor Pro Cycling Team), who had missed the first move but was then able to catch up with the INEOS duo after a delay.
The trio crossed the finish line half a minute behind Pellizzari. Thanks to bonus seconds, the new runner-up in the overall standings, Bernal, and Arensman swapped places, while Storer moved up six places to finish fourth.
Pellizzari is the first Italian to win the Tour of the Alps since Vincenzo Nibali in 2013. Back then, the race was still called the Giro del Trentino and was an all-Italian race before Austria was brought on board ten years ago and it became the race with the current name.
"It's nice to have won my first stage race," said Pellizzari. "I knew that I had to go full throttle again on the last climb to secure my victory. But I didn't just win for myself, but for the whole team, because they've given me a lot of support over the last few days. I wasn't too confident at the start, but the support made it better.
With his victory in the preparatory race for the Giro d'Italia, Pellizzari has also emphasised his podium ambitions for the Tour of Italy. Jonas Vingegaard (Visma | Lease a Bike) and Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates - XRG) will presumably be his biggest rivals there.

After an initial breakaway group was brought back on the first climb of the day, twelve riders broke away on the flat and quickly extended their lead to two and a half minutes. Among them were two stage winners of the current stage race. Alongside Lennart Jasch (Tudor Pro Cycling Team), who had won the queen stagewas also Tom Pidcock (Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team), who had won the third leg, with them. The best man in the overall standings among the breakaway riders was Vicente Rojas (Bardiani CSF 7 Saber), who was exactly one minute behind Pellizzari.
The gap grew to three minutes over the Kalterer Höhe. Jasch also collected the most points in the mountain classification there, which earned him the mountain jersey. The riders then crossed the finish line on an extra lap, on which they had to complete the almost 13-kilometre climb to Nobls twice - the first time as a 1st category mountain classification. While the group slowly thinned out there, the peloton also made up a lot of ground.
With 40 kilometres to go, four and a half kilometres before the first summit, Pidcock got serious. Only Juan Felipe Rodriguez (EF Education - EasyPost) immediately went with him. The duo made it over the crest with a half-minute lead over the peloton, all the other breakaway riders having been caught beforehand. Pidcock and then Rodriguez suffered the same fate on the second crossing of the climb.
22 kilometres before the finish, Pellizzari went on the offensive. Arensman and Bernal tried to follow the Italian's attack, but were unable to keep up and joined forces behind him. Four kilometres later, Pellizzari had secured six seconds in the bonus sprint, ten seconds later Bernal collected another four. Meanwhile, Arensman had dropped back and now formed a duo with defending champion Storer, who then returned to Bernal.
On the descent, Pellizzari kept the chasing trio at a distance of a good 20 seconds. There was no more danger until the finish. At the back, Bernal won the sprint for second place.
