The Tour of Guangxi takes place in the autonomous region of Guangxi in China. This is located in the south-east of the country. The capital of the region is Nanning - the place where the tour ends at this year's event. The Tour of Guangxi was held for the first time in 2017 and was won by Belgian rider Tim Wellens. After a three-year coronavirus break, the race was held again last year. Milan Vader from Team Visma | Lease a Bike won the race. In 2024, the tour will celebrate its fifth anniversary. As in the previous year, the Tour of Guangxi will also mark the end of the World Tour season this year. In addition to the men's tour, there is also a one-day race for women.
The Tour of Guangxi 2024 comprises six stages and is characterised by undulating terrain. The first and final stages are circuits through large cities. As there are repeated ramps here too, not only sprinters but also breakaway riders can expect to have a chance of winning the day. On the remaining stages, breakaways also have a good chance of holding their own against the riders in the peloton. Stage 5 is likely to be decisive in the battle for overall victory. Whoever can pull away decisively on the final climb will probably have the best chance of winning the overall tour.
The Tour of Guangxi 2024 kicks off in the coastal town of Fangchenggang. A circuit will be completed, which will be ridden a total of four times. In the middle of the circuit, there are always short climbs where breakaways are likely to try their luck. The most likely start, however, is a bunch sprint in the megacity of Fangchenggang.
The 2nd stage of the Tour of Guangxi connects the two cities of Chongzuo and Jingxi and runs along the border with Vietnam. Apart from a 3rd category climb and smaller ramps, the stage is fairly flat for 140 kilometres. Then there is a challenging 3rd category climb, which is also the key section of the day. The stage ends on slightly uphill terrain. This stage could see the first sorting in the battle for the overall classification. This is the first time that the team captains will have to prove themselves.
Stage 3 starts in the previous day's finish town of Jingxi and leads away from the border into the interior of the region to Bama. With a length of 214 kilometres, it is the longest stage of the tour. The first 140 kilometres are all downhill. This is followed by two 3rd category mountain classifications before the route descends again towards the day's finish. The two climbs in the final third of the race are likely to be too demanding for one or two sprinters, meaning that the breakaways will probably have the best chances on the stage. However, a bunch sprint is not completely out of the question.
The 4th stage of the Tour of Guangxi leads from Bama to Jinchengjiang over 177 kilometres and includes four challenging climbs. As the climbs are quite far apart, it will be difficult for the peloton to control a potential breakaway group. It could therefore turn into two races in one: one for the breakaway for the stage win and one for the overall classification.
Stage 5 of the Tour of Guangxi 2024 is also the queen stage of the tour. It runs for almost 160 kilometres on slightly hilly terrain before the decisive mountain finish. It is a 1st category climb that will probably decide the battle for the overall standings. Whoever takes the stage win on the climb to Nongla will probably also be the overall winner of the tour. But the stage is not only a highlight on a sporting level: the finish is also a vantage point over the region's famous karst landscape.
The final 6th stage of the Tour of Guangxi 2024 is designed as a circuit through Nanning - the capital of the autonomous region of Guangxi. The circuit will be completed a total of five times. There is a 1.4 kilometre climb in the first half of the circuit with an average gradient of 11.7 per cent, otherwise the course is flat. It remains to be seen whether the sprinter teams will be able to parry the attacks of the breakaways or whether they will spoil the sprinters' finale in the city of almost 9 million inhabitants.
