The 36-year-old Berlin native was introduced as the "Mountain King of Hearts" in front of his girlfriend at the team presentation before the start of the third stage of the Deutschland Tour.
"This is a huge honour for me. I've been living in Freiburg longer than I lived in Berlin back then," Geschke told the German Press Agency. The 2015 Tour de France stage winner has lived in Breisgau since 2012.
After the end of the stage on the 1207 metre high Schauinsland, Geschke, who rode nine days in the mountain jersey at this year's Tour of France and only had to hand over the coveted jersey with the red dots to the Danish overall winner Jonas Vingegaard two days before the end, will sign the city of Freiburg's Golden Book.
"Especially as a newcomer, it is proof that you have been accepted here and that the city is proud of what you have achieved," said Geschke.
Geschke is riding in the German national team jersey at the Deutschland Tour, as his French Cofidis racing team is not taking part in the five-day tour.
