The third stage of the Tour de Suisse 2025 presents a real challenge. From Aarau, the route covers 195.6 kilometres and 2928 metres in altitude to Heiden in Appenzellerland. What may look like a classic overtaking stage at first glance turns out to be demanding terrain for the pros on closer inspection. The final stage in the hilly Appenzellerland is particularly tough and could lead to a selection in the field of riders. The stage therefore offers opportunities for classic breakaways and all-rounders who are strong on both flat and hilly sections.

Stage route: From the cantonal capital of Aargau to Appenzellerland

The stage starts in the cantonal capital of Aargau, Aarau. From there, the route initially leads through flatter terrain before entering the increasingly hilly terrain of Appenzellerland. On the way, the riders pass Herisau with its historic village centre and picturesque alleyways. A highlight of the route is the ride through Appenzell, which is known for its lively Swiss traditions such as yodelling, alpine descents and traditional dances. The landscape becomes increasingly mountainous here, which will put the riders' legs to the test. The finale finally leads to Heiden, a spa town high above Lake Constance, which is known not only for its fresh air but also for its marvellous views of the lake and mountains.

Tactical considerations for the final

The final kilometres of the stage will be decisive. The hilly terrain in Appenzellerland is ideal for attacks. This is where puncheurs, i.e. riders who are capable of explosive attacks on the climbs, could play to their strengths. The general classification riders will have to stay alert and not lose any time. The finale could be a little too demanding for the sprinters.
