For a long time, a multi-day Tour of France for women was more wishful thinking than a realistic prospect for the future. Until now, the best female racers in the world have had to make do with a one-day race with varying topography: "La Course" initially took place on the Champs-Élysées in Paris until 2016, then in 2017 as a mountain finish on the Col d'Izoard followed by a pursuit stage. The location and route profile also changed in subsequent years (2018: mountain stage to Le Grand Bornand, 2019: hilly route around Pau, 2020: around Nice). This year, the women will ride "La Course" on 26 June part of the first stage of the men's Tour de France.
The premiere of the women's Tour de France will be celebrated on the Champs-Élysées in Paris on Sunday, 24 July 2022. The first stage will therefore take place on the same day as the final stage of the men's Tour de France. The women's peloton will then race across France over seven more days, according to organiser ASO. The route will not be announced until 14 October 2021 at the official 2022 Tour presentation.
In addition to a four-year sponsorship agreement with the Zwift online platformwhich also acquired the naming rights as the main sponsor - the full race title is "Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift" - the ASO announced that international TV coverage on free TV had also been secured. France Télévisions will provide the live images, which can be broadcast in 54 other European countries according to the broadcasting agreement. In contrast to other European broadcasters, ARD and ZDF have not yet commented on a possible broadcast of the Tour de France Femmes.
