The Tour de France aims to become more sustainable, but how significant is the actual impact? A critical look at the vehicle fleet, spectator travel, social projects and the unresolved question of the Tour’s overall emissions.

Anyone who has ever been to the Tour de France in person will be familiar with the sights: endless convoys of vehicles, team buses, lorries, motorbikes, support vehicles and the advertising caravan. I experienced that too during the men’s Tour de France. Although there were a few electric vehicles on the road, the overriding impression was quite different: a great deal of traffic, a great deal of logistics and an enormous amount of organisational effort. And a great deal of exhaust fumes.

Against this backdrop, it is worth taking a look at the sustainability measures announced by the organiser, A.S.O., for the men’s and women’s Tour de France. A quick search immediately reveals just how important sustainability is to the organiser. Under the ‘Riding into the future’ tab, which is intended to highlight the sustainability of the men’s Tour de France, you are directed to a document relating to last year’s race… At least on the official website of the women’s Tour de France, the document is up to date.

Where the Tour de France is making progress

However, some measures certainly deserve recognition. This applies in particular to spectators’ journeys to the event. For both races, the organiser is promoting special rail offers, cycle parking facilities and car-sharing platforms to reduce car traffic around the circuit. This is precisely where one of the greatest opportunities for greater sustainability is likely to lie. After all, at an event that attracts millions of people to the circuit every year, the journey made by the public probably generates significantly more emissions than the entire Tour convoy.

The social projects have also been a success. According to the organiser, since the launch of the “Riding into the Future” programme, around 700,000 children have been introduced to cycling as a sustainable mode of transport. In addition, more than 7,200 bicycles and 7,300 balance bikes have already been donated. Furthermore, the “Cycle City” initiative has been promoting cycle-friendly local authorities for years. In total, more than 200 towns and municipalities now hold this label, partly thanks to the Tour de France.

The impact of these measures extends far beyond the race weeks. Whilst many sustainability projects in sport are often merely symbolic, this initiative delivers tangible social benefits: children learn to cycle, disadvantaged families gain access to bicycles, and local authorities are encouraged to expand cycling infrastructure.

The vehicle fleet doesn’t tell the whole story

The electrification of vehicle fleets is a major focus of communication. For the 2026 Tour de France, A.S.O. states that 100 per cent of the organisation’s vehicles will be hybrid or electric. In addition, the lorries operated by logistics partner XPO Logistics are to run entirely on biofuels. That sounds impressive at first. However, the question arises as to how large a proportion of the entire Tour convoy this actually represents. The generation of the electricity also raises questions here, particularly as France is one of the countries that continues to rely on nuclear power.

Anyone experiencing the Tour in person will see more than just the organisers’ vehicles. There are also team buses, support vehicles, motorbikes, police vehicles, media vehicles, sponsors’ vehicles and the advertising caravan. The men’s Tour’s caravan alone comprises 180 vehicles and more than 700 people. The event itself spans 3,320 kilometres, 21 stages and numerous regions.

Of course, any move towards electrification is a step forward. However, it does not answer the crucial question: what are the actual emissions from the event as a whole? It is precisely these figures that the organiser has so far failed to publish.

Waste collection points – are you serious?

A far more critical view is taken of some of the measures that are prominently highlighted in the sustainability documentation. These include the special waste collection zones along the route, also known as ‘littering zones’. There are 118 such zones planned for the men’s race and 26 for the women’s race. This is where the professionals are expected to dispose of their water bottles, packaging and other race waste.

The problem is this: the fact that professionals shouldn’t simply throw their rubbish into the countryside isn’t some extraordinary achievement in sustainability, but actually something that goes without saying. To be honest, anyone who promotes this as a great achievement is simply making a fool of themselves.

Conclusion: Good ideas, but not enough transparency

The Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes are certainly making progress in a number of areas when it comes to sustainability. In particular, encouraging more climate-friendly travel for spectators, as well as the cycling and educational projects for children, are initiatives that have an impact beyond the race weekends.

Some of the key figures presented, however, are less convincing. It should go without saying that professionals are expected to dispose of their rubbish in designated areas. Furthermore, whilst the electrification of the organisation’s vehicles is a positive step, it says only so much about the environmental footprint of a Tour convoy comprising hundreds of vehicles.

The crucial question therefore remains unanswered: how high are the Tour’s actual emissions? Until the organisers publish a complete and transparent carbon footprint, it is difficult to assess just how significant the real sustainability impact of these measures actually is. They are heading in the right direction, but transparency could be significantly better. And an out-of-date document on the Tour de France’s official website reveals just how much A.S.O. actually cares about sustainability.
