Tour de France dress rehearsal a success: Roglic wins Criterium du Dauphine

Three weeks before the start of the Tour de France, Primoz Roglic has underlined his ambitions by winning the tough Criterium du Dauphine.

Double victory for Jumbo-Visma

The former ski jumper from Team Jumbo-Visma put in a strong performance on the eighth and final stage over 138.8 kilometres from Saint-Alban-Leysse to the Plateau de Salaison to claim victory in the overall standings. The Slovenian Roglic took second place in the uphill finish behind his team-mate Jonas Vingegaard (Denmark), who finished in second place overall.

Roglic had already laid the foundation for the overall victory with his second place on Saturdaywhen he took the yellow jersey from his team-mate Wout Van Aert after climbing over the 2642 metre high Col du Galibier and the 2067 metre high Col de la Croix de Fer. On Sunday, Roglic and Vingegaard gave their rivals no chance on the final climb of the last stage.

In recent years, a successful performance at the Criterium du Dauphiné has often been a good sign for the Tour. In five of the last ten editions, the overall winner of the Dauphine went on to win the Tour of France: Chris Froome (2013, 2015, 2016), Geraint Thomas (2018) and Bradley Wiggins (2012).

Froome gives up

Froome, meanwhile, has to fear for his Tour ticket. The 37-year-old Briton got off his bike before the penultimate stage of the day and once again raised questions about his form.

"It's disappointing, but my progress has been good so far and I don't want to risk a setback at this important stage of the season," said the Briton. Since his serious training crash during the 2019 Dauphiné, Froome has been searching for the form of old.
