The German riders continue to shine at the Tour de France Femmes 2023. After Liane Lippert (Movistar Team) had already won stage 2, Ricarda Bauernfeind secured the second German victory of the day on stage 5 after 126.1 kilometres between Onet-Le-Chateau and Albi.
The 23-year-old from Team Canyon//SRAM Racing had broken away from the peloton around 36 kilometres before the finish and could no longer be caught. Bauernfeind pulled out a maximum lead of around one and a half minutes. In the end, she saved 22 seconds at the finish. Behind her, Liane Lippert, who had broken away from the peloton on the last descent of the day together with Swiss rider Marlen Reusser (Team SD Worx), sprinted to third place.
"To be honest, I can't believe it. It's just unbelievable. My team-mates and the sports management have supported me. It was an incredible ride by the team I would say. We had to chase the first group because we had missed them. My team-mates did such a fantastic job. Then it was up to me. I tried to attack and it worked," said the beaming winner at the finish.
Ricarda Bauernfeind also emphasised once again how important the victory on stage 5 of the 2023 Women's Tour de France was for her team Canyon//SRAM Racing. "We've been waiting all year for this victory. Now we've done it - fantastic."
Bauernfeind also improved in the overall standings thanks to her solo run and moved into the top 10, where she is currently in ninth place. Liane Lippert is still eighth. Belgian Lotte Kopecky from Team SD Worx defended the overall leader's yellow jersey.
On Friday, the women's Tour de France continues with the Stage 6 continue. The programme then includes 122.1 kilometres between Albi and Blagnac.
