The Ecuadorian underwent an operation to remove a perineum cyst after the Volta a Catalunya in his home country. The wound healed more slowly than initially expected, which delayed his return to training. The former Maglia Rosa winner is back on the bike and fully recovered, but will still need some time to return to his best form.
Team doctor Jon Greenwell explains the cancellation with the size of the surgical wound. The recovery time was longer than originally predicted. The team decided that the remaining time was not sufficient for adequate preparation for the Giro. According to Greenwell, a start without 100 per cent fitness would have been associated with risks of complications.
Carapaz works closely with the EF Education-EasyPost performance team. During the recovery phase, he trained in the gym and was in constant contact with the doctors. The 33-year-old has already won a Tour stage, worn the yellow jersey, finished on the overall podium and won the mountains classification and the Super Combatif prize. At the 2026 Tour, he wants to ride with the best in the Pyrenees and the Alps.
