The AG2R-Citroën team will be riding the 2023 Tour de France partly on as yet unreleased aero wheels from Campagnolo. TOUR took a closer look at the Italian bike component manufacturer's innovation on the racing bikes of Felix Gall and Co.

The wheels belong to Campagnolo's WTO (Wind Tunnel Optimised) line and are therefore designed to be particularly aerodynamic. Named WTO 45 and WTO 60 after their rim height, the wheels hardly differ visually from the current models of the same name. However, we noticed that some of the rims look a little more bulbous and do not have painted stickers.

Improved aerodynamics

In addition, 28-millimetre Pirelli tyres are mounted on these rims, while the narrower rims are fitted with 26-millimetre tyres. A mechanic confirmed to us that the new rims are slightly wider and now have an internal dimension of 21 millimetres instead of 19.

The aim of the new design is to achieve better aerodynamics with wide tyres. Otherwise, the changes are limited, Campagnolo is sticking with tubeless-compatible hooked rims and the weight is also said to have hardly changed.
