Julian Alaphilippe celebrates his only victory at the "Primavera" five years ago. The Frenchman's attack on the Poggio initially fizzles out. The chasers led by Peter Sagan and Michal Kwiatkowski came close again. Nevertheless, Alaphilippe was still able to celebrate on the Via Roma. One year later, everything looks set for a second victory for Alaphilippe. This time, the Deceuninck - Quick Step pro even manages to pull away slightly on the Poggio. However, his pursuer Wout van Aert does not give up. Thanks to his downhill skills, the Belgian managed to catch up and beat Alaphilippe in a two-man sprint.

The picture of the previous two years is repeated in 2021: Alaphilippe attacks again on the Poggio, but can't get away. A small group rides over the crest together. Jasper Stuyven attacks at the end of the descent. The Belgian gets away slightly, the Dane Sören Kragh Andersen catches up. Stuyven opens the sprint from second position and saves a small lead over the chasing group. Kragh Andersen is relegated to ninth place.

In 2022, Tadej Pogacar makes his mark on the race for the first time. The Slovenian attacks on the Poggio, but can't get away. Matej Mohoric surges ahead in the first bend of the descent. A year later, Pogacar tries again on the Poggio. However, the two-time Tour de France winner again lacked the necessary punch to hold off the competition. In the end, it was Mathieu van der Poel who made the decisive attack. Nobody can follow the Dutchman's attack. He takes the victory single-handedly.
