Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx - Protime) has won stage 3 of the Giro d'Italia Women 2025. The sprint dominator of recent years had it particularly easy this time, as most of her rivals were involved in a crash 2.5 kilometres before the finish.

For Wiebes, it was the 106th victory of her career, the 13th of the current season and her fourth in her Giro history. The 122 kilometres from Vezza d'Oglio to Trento were set up for a bunch sprint right from the start. After the Passo del Tonale (1st category) was crossed after a good 17 kilometres, there were no more major climbs. However, there was no classic bunch sprint, as a crash at a roundabout 2500 metres before the finish line on wet roads after a thunderstorm took the majority of the peloton out of the race.

Only eight riders escaped unscathed. Among them was Josie Nelson (Team Picnic PostNL), who finished second behind Wiebes and ahead of her team-mate Lotte Kopecky. None of the riders suffered serious injuries in the race accident, most of them were merely held up because the crash was triggered in the front positions of the field. Ultimately, all the women were classified with the same time at the finish, meaning that Anna Henderson (Lidl - Trek) was able to retain the pink jersey ahead of Marlen Reusser (Movistar Team).

Wiebes almost falls too

"We were lucky that we were so far ahead at the roundabout and got through unscathed and that there were still three of us," said winner Wiebes in the finish interview. "Barbara (Guarischi) then closed the small gap (on Christina Schweinberger) and Lotte then prepared the sprint superbly. I was also a bit scared because my tyres slipped for a moment, but luckily I was able to stay on the bike."

As Wiebes had not yet collected any points for the points jersey, Henderson also remains in the lead in this classification. However, the British rider had to cede the lead in the mountains classification to Usoa Ostolaza (Laboral Kutxa - Fundación Euskadi), who left the peloton shortly before the Tonale and took the points. Meanwhile, Antonia Niedermaier (CANYON//SRAM zondacrypto) remains in the jersey of the best young rider.

The profile of stage 3 was a mirror image of the previous day. If it was only downhill for the first few kilometres and uphill for the rest of the day, this time it was the other way round. From kilometre 0, it was uphill for 17.5 kilometres to the Passo del Tonale (1st category). There were no attacks, Ostolaza only broke away shortly before the summit to dust off the 25 points for the mountain jersey. She was caught again on the descent.

Nora Jenčušová (BePink - Imatra - Bongioanni) then broke away from the peloton on the flatter part of the descent. Petra Zsankó (CERATIZIT Pro Cycling Team) set off in pursuit, but was unable to bridge the 40-second gap. At the intermediate sprint, the peloton, from which Reusser took two bonus seconds, was one and a half minutes behind the leader. At this point, half of the day had been completed.

Crash at roundabout leads to preliminary decision

The SD Worx - Protime team then took over the chase. When CANYON//SRAM zondacrypto also joined in, it was all over for Zsankó with just under 30 kilometres to go. Jenčušová also only made it a little further.

When the peloton reached Trento, the roads were wet after a thunderstorm. At a roundabout 2.5 kilometres before the finish, several women at the front slipped away so that there was no closed sprint. Christina Schweinberger (Fenix-Deceuninck) was the first to benefit from this. She stayed ahead of a group of seven around Wiebes, Kopecky and Elisa Longo Borghini (UAE Team ADQ) until 800 metres before the finish, all of whom came through the roundabout unscathed. Wiebes then had no trouble riding home to victory ahead of Nelson.
