On 12 November, the organisers RCS will present the routes for the men's and women's Giro d'Italia in Rome. As always, there is a lot of speculation about what the stages might look like in the run-up to the event, but little concrete information from the official side.
That has now changed somewhat. In an interview with Bicisport Giro boss Mauro Vegni has already revealed some details about the course of the men's race. Accordingly, the 2025 Giro d'Italia will start with three stages in Albania. The UCI calendar shows the start date as 9 May, a Friday, which already indicated that there could be an early rest day on 12 May for a transfer back to Italy. According to Vegni, the planned destination is Rome on 1 June. According to the Giro boss, after the start in Albania, the race will continue in Apulia, which is located on the south-eastern part of the Italian boot - Albania is on the other side of the Adriatic Sea. Vegni also confirmed that there will be two time trials. Where and when they will be held is not yet known.
In terms of difficulty, the 108th Giro d'Italia should be modelled on the 2024 edition. "However, there won't be such a tough last week as we had two years ago," says the Italian. Back then, the highest difficulties were concentrated with a stage to the Three Peaks and a mountain time trial to Monte Lussari on the third and penultimate day at the end of the Tour of Italy - Primoz Roglic snatched the pink jersey from Geraint Thomas in the mountain time trial. Vegni emphasised that it would be "a tough finale, but very even, as we have had this year over the three weeks."
It is also possible that there could be a gravel stage again, as Vegni revealed. "We will incorporate some interesting elements - things that exist in our country that are very important. That could be gravel or other things."
The 2024 Giro d'Italia was dominated by Tadej Pogacar on the way to his historic double of the Giro and Tour de France. Vegni admits that he still has hopes of seeing the Slovenian superstar at the start of the Tour of Italy in 2025.

There has also been recent speculation about a possible start for Pogacar's great rival Jonas Vingegaard at the 2025 Giro. Vegni hopes this will be the case, but at the same time stated that many interests, such as those of the team, have to be taken into account when planning the stars' season.
However, Vegni did not comment on the women's Giro d'Italia, which was won by Elisa Longo Borghini in 2024 - little has been leaked about the route so far. What is clear is that the stage race, which was first organised by the RCS in 2024 under the name Giro d'Italia Women, will take place from 6 to 13 July 2025, ending around two weeks before the start of the Tour de France Femmes.
