The Giro d'Italia works its way further and further south towards the end of the first week. There is hardly a more central location in Italy than the start in Foligno or the finish in Perugia. The two cities are barely 40 kilometres apart. But that's enough for the first individual time trial of the tour.
Foligno was last the starting point of a stage of the Giro in 2017. It was also an individual time trial back then. Distance and profile? Similar. Only the finish was different. Tom Dumolin won the battle against the clock to Montefalco by 49 seconds ahead of Geraint Thomas. Perugia is also classic Giro terrain with more than 30 participations. However, the Corsa Rosa's appearances in the Umbrian capital have been rare this millennium. Only one stage started here in 2021. The last arrival was almost 40 years ago.
The route is relatively unspectacular until the final climb. On well-maintained roads, the course leads on flat terrain for 34 kilometres in a northerly direction to Ponte Valleceppi, a suburb of Perugia. There the time is stopped for the second time after 18.6 kilometres. Then the finale awaits.
We climb up to the centre of Perugia. The first 1300 metres of the remaining 6600 are extremely steep. An average of 11.8 per cent awaits. The rest becomes more pleasant, but still averages 3.2 per cent with a further 11 per cent at the 2-kilometre mark, framed by short downhill sections.
Stage 7 is actually a classic stage for time trial specialists. The finale, but especially the first part of the climb, could be their undoing and cost them a lot of time, meaning that the classification riders are once again ahead in the end. However, the specialists around Filippo Ganna have 34 kilometres to build up a cushion on Tadej Pogacar and co.
Apart from the Slovenian and Thomas, however, there are hardly any pros among the GC contenders who feel comfortable on a time trial bike. Ganna, on the other hand, has already proven in the past that he can ride fast on the odd climb. He is likely to go into the race as the top favourite.
