Genoa is regularly part of the Giro d'Italia, but in the past the harbour city was more of a finish line. In 2024, however, it will be the starting point of stage 5. This leads eastwards almost always directly along the coast. Accordingly, the topographical difficulties are also manageable. With the Passo del Bracco (3rd category) after 63 kilometres and a 4th category climb to Montemagno just over 20 kilometres before the finish, only two minor obstacles await.
Shortly before Montemagno, the route reaches Camaiore. Tirreno-Adriatico used to start there regularly in the past. This is honoured with an intermediate sprint before the route deviates from the coast and leads through the hinterland for the last few kilometres to Lucca.
Lucca was last part of the Giro in 1985. And back then, it was even more than that: the tour ended here after 22 stages and a 48-kilometre time trial. Francesco Moser still won the battle against the clock, but the gap to Bernard Hinault, who celebrated his third and final Giro victory in pink, was too great.
Unlike in 1985, this time it will not be about the overall classification when the race stops in Lucca. Although the day also has an elevation gain of 1700 metres and is classified as hilly on the official Giro website, this is likely to be another sprinter's race. Although the climb to the Passo del Bracco is 16 kilometres long, it is too far away from the finish to be a decisive factor.
