The Management Board of the Union Européenne de Cyclisme has awarded German Cycling the right to organise the 2027 European Track Cycling Championships for elite cyclists. The event will be held from 10 to 14 February 2027. German Cycling is working together with the Berlin Cycling Federation to organise the event. The Berlin Senate is supporting the European Track Cycling Championships.

Return to Germany

The European Track Cycling Championships for elite cyclists were last held in Berlin in 2017. The Berlin Velodrom has also hosted numerous national and international championships - in 2020, the Track Cycling World Championships were organised in Berlin. The velodrome has been one of the most important locations for track cycling for decades. World Cup events and six-day races have shaped the history of the Berlin track.

Significance for Olympic qualification

The European Championships are regarded as one of the most important competition highlights in the international track cycling calendar. The title fights play an important role on the road to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. UEC President Enrico Della Casa emphasises the importance of Berlin for international track cycling. The traditional cycling track and the role of the European Championships in the Olympic qualification process make the European Track Cycling Championships an important event.

European Track Cycling Championships competition programme

The derny competition will be part of the European Track Cycling Championships for the first time. Stand-up racing has already been part of the competition programme at previous events. Both disciplines are among the most traditional competitions in track cycling. Iris Spranger, Senator for the Interior and Sport, sees the award as a special honour and uses the award to mention the Olympic bid. In her opinion, the European Championships emphasise the competence and appeal of Berlin as an international sports capital. According to Spranger, the award is a good sign for Berlin's bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Bernd Dankowski, President of German Cycling, describes the award as great for track cycling in Germany. According to him, international title fights in one's own country are something special for the athletes, for the fans and for the perception of track cycling as a whole.

European Track Cycling Championship history

While continental championship titles in sub-disciplines (such as the standing race) have a longer tradition, the Union Européenne de Cyclisme (UEC) has only been organising the official European Track Cycling Championships for the elite with all world championship disciplines annually since 2010. Germany has hosted the event twice since then.

  • 2017 (Berlin): The continental championships were held in the Berlin Velodrom. It was the first time that the newly created elite European Championships took place in reunified Germany.
  • 2022 (Munich): The European Championships took place as part of the European Championships 2022 on a temporary cycling track at Messe München. This home European Championships was historically successful: Germany dominated the competitions and was the most successful nation in the medal table with 6 gold medals (led by exceptional athlete Emma Hinze).
