What professional cyclist Simon Geschke was denied a month earlier at the Tour de France, Jakob Geßner achieved on home soil.

Despite renowned competitors such as overall winner Adam Yates, Germany's climbing ace Emanuel Buchmann, former Tour winner Egan Bernal and Frenchman Romain Bardet, the 22-year-old outsider took home the blue jersey of the best climber at the Tour of Germany.

Geßner comments

"For me, it was the best tour of my career so far. We wanted to present ourselves as a team, we wanted to make our mark. We did that with the mountain jersey," said the rider from the German third-division Team Lotto - Kern Haus after the final stage in Stuttgart. Geßner had taken the jersey after the first stage in his Thuringian homeland and never relinquished it.

"To win the three mountain classifications in my home country and then to be able to wear the jersey for the first time - it's simply a fantastic week," summarised Geßner.

Geschke had to give up the mountain jersey

"He's kind of the Geschke of the Tour of Germany, the parallels are there," Simon Geschke, who rode nine days in the mountain jersey at the Tour de France, had said about Geschke. Unlike Geßner, Geschke was unable to take home the jersey at the time and had to hand it over to the Danish overall winner Jonas Vingegaard two days before the end of the tour. In his adopted home of Freiburg, Geschke was nevertheless celebrated as the "Mountain King of Hearts" before the start of the third stage.
