Stage 5 starts again north of Lyon and heads north-east towards the Jura mountains. The first half of the section, which crosses the Saone valley, is completely flat. The first foothills of the Jura are then reached.
But until the first crossing of the finish line in Salines-les-Bains after 142 kilometres, a category 3 climb is the only test for the peloton, which initially moves on a plateau. However, shortly before reaching the finish line once again, the route turns onto more mountainous terrain. Another category 3 climb and the steep Cote de Thesy (3.6 km at 8.8%, 2nd category) 15 kilometres before the end get in the way. After that, it's all downhill.
A classic stage for breakaways: on the flat, the escape group has enough time to build up a decent lead, from which they can draw on in the undulating part of the day.
The sprinters are out. A classement rider from the second row - perhaps one of the young guns from the Team DSMMax Poole or Oscar Only - on the last climb to make up a few seconds on the top favourites.
The 5th stage of the Criterium du Dauphine starts at 11:45. The finish is expected to be between 16:25 and 16:52.
