INEOS Grenadiers announced the appointment of Geraint Thomas as "Director of Racing" on 27 November. The 2018 Tour de France winner moves from active racing to a newly created leadership position within the British WorldTour team. In his new role, Thomas will work closely with Team Principal Sir Dave Brailsford and Dr Scott Drawer as well as the rest of the management team. His main responsibilities will include helping to shape race strategy, recruiting new riders and developing and preparing the team for competition. The Welshman has been part of Team Sky since the team was founded in 2010 and has therefore witnessed and helped shape the team's entire development.
Thomas brings more than two decades of experience at the highest level to his new position. In addition to his Tour de France victory in 2018, his greatest successes include several Grand Tour podium finishes, stage race victories and two Olympic gold medals with the British national team.
For Thomas, the move to management feels like a natural next step. "This team has been my home since day one and stepping into this role feels like a natural next step. I've learnt so much from the people around me - fellow drivers and staff - and I now want to build on our incredible past successes and look to the future," Thomas explained on his appointment.

The Welshman also emphasised his commitment to promoting young talent: "I'm passionate about helping the next generation to pass on this experience and take the team forward to achieve our goal of winning Grand Tours again - and I'm looking forward to helping shape that future."
The appointment of Thomas marks an important step in the development of the INEOS Grenadiers. After a period without a Grand Tour win since Egan Bernal's 2021 Giro triumph, the team is aiming for a return to the top of the three-week tours. Thomas is expected to use his extensive experience to help put the team back in position to fight for overall victories at the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España.
The team has already signed several promising young riders in recent years, including the British time trial specialist Joshua Tarling and the Norwegian newcomer Embret Svestad-Bårdseng. The signing of French star Kévin Vauquelin was also recently announced. Thomas' expertise will now help to optimally develop these talents and at the same time refine the team's racing strategy.
