The Italian climbing specialist Domenico Pozzovivo (Israel-Premier Tech) left the race, as did the Norwegian Sven Erik Byström (Intermarche-Circus-Wanty) and the Australian Callum Scotson (Team Jayco-AlUla).
The number of riders who had to withdraw due to the coronavirus rose to nine, including world champion and former race leader Remco Evenepoel (Soudal - Quick Step). On Monday, the Giro organisers reintroduced the obligation to wear masks.
In addition, fresh snow and the risk of avalanches have forced the organisers to change the route. The 13th stage on Friday to Crans-Montana in Switzerland will be shortened from 199 to 207 kilometres.
The highest point of this year's Tour of Italy, the 2469 metre high Grosser Sankt Bernard pass, has to be removed from the programme as more fresh snow is expected before the stage. The peloton is now to be routed through the tunnel, which is significantly lower and almost six kilometres long.
