After 135.6 kilometres in Wollongong, the 17-year-old relegated the Portuguese Antonio Morgado to second place in the final sprint. Herzog had already won the bronze medal in the time trial won. Belgian Vlad van Mechelen came third.
Eight years after Jonas Bokeloh, the German Cycling Federation (BDR) was once again delighted to have a junior world champion. Herzog showed an offensive and spirited race, rode alone to the leader Morgado in the final and was ultimately unbeatable in the sprint.
"That was the hardest sprint of my life. We were neck and neck. I was just pedalling. I've never had a sprint like that before," said the talented rider from Simmerberg in Bavaria. It went perfectly, even the rain didn't bother him.
On Friday, medals were also awarded in the men's U23 road race in Wollongong. After 169.8 kilometres, Yevgeniy Fedorov from Kazakhstan secured the gold medal in the two-man sprint ahead of Mathias Vacek from the Czech Republic. Bronze went to Sören Waerenskjold from Norway. The best German was Michel Heßmann in eleventh place.
