Five-time track cycling world champion Emma Hinze is in favour of women's periods not being a taboo subject in top-class sport.

"Every woman has them and that's why we should talk about them and normalise them. It can be a difficult phase for us female athletes. I have abdominal pain then and I go to the start with it, I want to fight through it," the 24-year-old told the "Rheinische Post". Such days are humbling. "But we can take it," said Hinze, who will be at the European Championships in Munich goes to the start.

In competitive sport, people are quickly condemned for weaknesses. "People need to realise that it affects almost every woman - and female competitive athletes are no exception," said Hinze. She is the type of woman who still wants to push through. Her ambition is too great for that. "I work towards races for a long time, so I want to see them through. Even though the cramps afterwards can be extreme, because we are very tense in our sport anyway."
